Zabio vs OpenRouter
OpenRouter is the widest model marketplace, with more than 500 models behind one API and two automatic routers. Zabio carries fewer models and does more with each request: it picks the model and its reasoning setting, splits a request when that is cheaper, and takes no cut of what it saves you.

Where OpenRouter beats us
- You need a model Zabio does not carry. OpenRouter lists more than 500; Zabio has 114 chat models from 10 vendors.
- It is a bigger, longer-established company, with years of scale behind it.
- You want to pick a specific host for each model by hand, from the long list of providers OpenRouter works with.
- You want the large ecosystem around one marketplace, with many tools that support it out of the box.
Where we beat OpenRouter
We care most about one number: how much we save you. Everything below follows from that.
- You want your bill to go down. OpenRouter takes 5.5% of every credit purchase, whatever you spend it on. Zabio moves each call to a cheaper model that does the job, adds a (see the pricing page) service fee on that lower provider price and (see the pricing page) per auto request, takes nothing on top-ups, and leaves every cent of the saving with you.
- You want to know why a model was picked. Every Zabio response names the job, the line and the reason, with the cost and the saving of that call.
- You send long documents. Smart Splitting answers from a verified excerpt when that is cheaper, about a third less on long-document questions in our tests.
- You classify at volume. Under auto, Zabio answers strict-schema classification jobs with Jev when that is cheaper, at a fraction of the price of a chat model.
- You use your own vendor keys. Zabio charges no service fee on them, at any volume; auto requests pay only the small fixed fee for picking the model.
Switching from OpenRouter
Both speak the OpenAI API, so the switch is two lines: point base_url at https://api.zabio.ai/v1 and use your Zabio key. Send model auto to let Zabio choose, or name any model from our models page.
What makes the difference, in depth
Smart Splitting
One request, several models, a smaller bill, decided for you on every call. When we can save, we save.
Smart routing

Jev for classification
Tagging, routing, moderation and sentiment for a fraction of the price of a chat model, named or picked by auto.
Caching
Your history cached for you, the 1 hour cache when turns are slow, and never a cut of your cache discount.
Flex
Half price when you can wait, with one deadline field.
Batching
Thousands of requests in one file at about half price, with auto routing on every line.
Teams and keys

Questions
- How is Zabio different from OpenRouter?
- OpenRouter is a marketplace with the widest catalog, over 500 models, and it charges 5.5% on every credit purchase whatever you spend it on. Zabio covers fewer models and picks among them for you: it adds a small service fee to each call and a small fixed fee to each auto request, charges nothing on top-ups, and takes no cut of what routing saves you. Both have an automatic router; Zabio's shows the job, the line and the reason on every response.
- What is Smart Splitting?
- Under auto, a request that carries a long document and asks about only part of it can be split: a cheap model copies out the lines the question needs, word for word, Jev checks that the extract holds everything the answer needs, and the model auto picked answers from that extract instead of the whole document. If the check fails, Zabio sends the full document and pays for the attempt itself, so a split never costs you more. In our tests it cut the cost of long-document questions by about a third on average, and by more than half on contracts, with every fact kept. It never applies to a model you name, every step shows in zabio.split, and zabio.split set to off turns it off for a request.
- Can I pay less when I am not in a hurry?
- Yes. Send zabio.deadline with a duration of 15 minutes or more, for example "30m", and Zabio serves the call on the flex tier of OpenAI or Google where the model has one, at about half the price. Under auto, candidates are compared at their flex prices. If the vendor has no capacity, Zabio retries at the normal tier and bills the price actually used, so a flex request never fails for that reason. Your saving is measured against the flex price of your usual model, so it never counts the vendor's discount as routing's work. For large jobs that can wait hours, batching sends a whole file at the vendors' batch prices.
